The Oerlikon 20mm automatic cannon was used on US Navy ships from 1942, replacing the Browning M2 machine gun, which had less range and firepower.
It gained special prominence in its role as a naval anti-aircraft gun, especially against Japanese kamikaze attacks during the Pacific War.
